Artist Statement

My current body of work is designed to emulate geological formations using textiles to create pieces that appear both pretty and delicate. The appearance of the former textiles simultaneously evoke the desire to touch them and the knowledge that they could potentially cause harm.

The once soft and flowing fabrics are cast in clay and burned away, leaving behind rigid and sharp pieces. While the pieces are sharp and dangerous, they are also thin and fragile. They become one with the clay that holds them together in an assemblage. Working in a symbiotic relationship; the pieces that protrude from the form protect the body that lies beneath, and the body holds the pieces together and shelters them. While the pieces are sharp and dangerous, they are also thin and fragile.

The remaining details of the textiles allude to the softness that once existed but have metamorphosed under the pressure of adversity. Their past form is the underlying structure that gives strength to each piece, without which, they could not exist as they are now.
